Catching Up!

All that audiobook listening leaves little time for updating the blog!

I have listened to all 13 books in The Dresden Files ....LOVED IT!  I love that it is combination of scifi/fantasy/mystery/quirky/comedy/romance/and everything in between!

Dresden Files wiki

Although the mental image I have of Dresden definitely does not match the guy on the front of the book

or the guy who played him on a short lived TV show

But regardless of my mental images, the books are very easy to listen too, addictive even, if you can make it through the beginning of the first book.  I almost gave up, as it didn't seem to appeal to me, but golly am I ever glad I persevered!  I am sad that I have listened to the last one of the series and look forward to listening to the few "Side Jobs" or short stories that Jim Butcher has written.

The other thing that makes these books so great to listen to is the skill of James Marsters who did the reading.  He was phenomenal!  The reader changed for the 13th book and it just didn't do it for me.

Another One Completed

The Next Always
Book 1 of the Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy

I know her books can be sappy and trite, but I just love Nora Roberts!  She makes me laugh, right in the middle of a book - out loud!  I know the rhythm of her books, I know that there will be little spats, then big spats and the leading man is going to be kind and caring - probably has a very strong mother figure.  In her series, the three women are strong, opinionated and outspoken.  There will be one who is more vulnerable than the rest, one who is a bigger smart ass than the rest and one who comes from the outside to join.

I know all this and yet I get sucked in every time!  It is the little quirks of the characters that make her books good.  The little unexpected things that pop up and really do make you LOL!  :)

January's Books

I started off the New Year with a new series I had heard about.  I like to chat about books with my sister because she actually goes out and buys them and reads current titles.  I on the other hand, having to live within a family budget, borrow books, buy them at garage sales and download them for the ereader and audiobook apps on my phone.

I listened to the George RR Martin series A Song of Ice and Fire books 1-4
  1. A Game of Thrones
  2. A Clash of Kings
  3. A Storm of Swords
  4. A Feast of Crows
as well as the two short prequels
  1. Hedge Knight
  2. Sworn Sword
I am loving this series!  And the audio versions I have listened to have been great!  I love it when a reader does a fantastic job with the book.  I get lost in the audio versions just as much as I do with a hard copy.  I get swept up into the castle life, can envision the cold and snow, the battles and the voyages.

Mr. Martin has done a marvelous job of creating a world that while not real, is close enough that we can put ourselves into it.  The characters, whether hero, villain or both, have character traits we can identify with.  Each hero has a dark side and each villain has a soft side.  Can't wait to download book 5 and lose myself again!

As well, I have listened to James Patterson's 4 Blind Mice.  I am slowly working my way through his entire bibliography - I just love his work but I don't enjoy reading his books back to back to back, I need to throw a couple books by different authors in between.

And so it begins....

I am coming into this challenge a little late - but only in the "strictly following the rules sense".  I have been listening to books for over a year now and have found it a welcome respite in my hectic and chaotic life.

I steal moments to listen at every chance, have to pick the kids up?  No problem, plug my phone/ereader into the van radio and I am set.  Low on milk?  Awesome!  Off to the grocery store I go with a book playing in my ear.  Going to the YMCA to exercise?  SWEET!  One hour of uninterrupted listening.  Need to drive Hannah to an audition in Toronto?  Fantastic!  She will watch a movie or fall asleep in the back seat and I will have 3+ hours to listen WOO HOO!

Growing up, my parents always read.  You could often find my mother sitting at the kitchen table, bent over a book first thing in the morning, after work, as a way to relax in the evenings.  Books travelled with us wherever we went.  I will always remember packing up the Rubbermaid tote with books to take on our two week vacation to a small island in Northern Ontario.  The other vacationers considered it a running joke, the number of books that we brought, but every year we got through all those books, and more often than not, the other island vacationers would wander by and pick a few out for themselves.  There is nothing better than finding a secluded spot under a tree, by the water and losing yourself in a good book.

Of course now, with a growing family of 7, a full time job, a refrigerator that is chronically empty and a house that desperately requires a dust bunny intervention, I have difficulty finding that secluded spot or the time to get lost in my book.  I can lock myself in my bedroom, but that doesn't stop the kids from finding a million reasons to knock on my door.  I tried bubble baths to read in, but someone always had to go to the bathroom!  Then I decided, I would settle down to read after the kids went to bed; but for some reason, no matter what he is doing, despite the fact he has not felt the need to speak to me in hours, has been deeply involved in whatever movie or sporting event he is watching, as soon as that book comes up in front of my face my husband wants to talk!

Listening to audiobooks, allows me to still get the things done that need to be done, while still enjoying myself.  Dusting is no longer quite so tedious, mopping the floor flies by and folding laundry is becoming a new favourite thing to do to pass the time.
